purpose: to determine the normal values of bony inter- and intra-orbital distances in an iranian adult population by orbital ct scan. methods: the study was conducted on all adults who were referred to farabi eye hospital from march 2003 to june 2005 for ct scan ordered for complaints unrelated to craniofacial or orbital abnormalities. patients were excluded in the presence of any pathology of craniofacial bones, globes and orbits. results: four hundred ct scans (134 females, 266 males; mean age 36.9±16.7 years) were studied. mean interorbital distance at the level of the posterior border of the frontal process of the maxilla was 2.30 cm (1.8 to 3.5 cm) in men and 2.17 cm (1.5 to 3.2 cm) in women. (p<0.01) this value at the level of orbital equator was 2.65 cm (2-3.4 cm) in men and 2.46 cm (1.7-3.2 cm) in women. (p<0.01) conclusion: normal values of orbital measurements in iranian adults seem to be smaller than published standards. this fact should be considered for interpreting ct scans of the orbit.
